
The popularity of avatars–increasingly popular thanks to sites such as Second Life–has brought these virtual characters to the handset. Just as we helped Cingular create MySpace Mobile, a Java app that allows users of the social network to use it on the go, Comverse Technology now has software allowing Second Lifers to view and control their avatar from a mobile device.

The technology has caught on with TV networks as well. CBS Interactive and Artificial Life, Inc. (based in Hong Kong) recently debuted a mobile avatar-based game for the CW show “America’s Next Top Model.” In partnership with Cyworld, the South Korean SNS, NBC plans a similar game based on the daytime drama “Passions.” TV-inspired cellphone games reflect the growing use of avatars to engage customers and audiences.
