Widgets 101: Mobile Widgets

by Allison

Mobile phones and widgets seem made for one another. They are both small, portable, and customizable. While the mobile phone requires fast content delivery, the widget can provide it in a concise and targeted way.

Mobile widgets are based on Java applications that you can download to your phone. The handset effectively becomes a widget desktop. Providers Mobidgets, Widsets, Plusmo, and Bluepulse offer content such as RSS readers, weather reports, soduko, Gmail, Flickr, Bloggr, eBay… even a blood alcohol tester.

One of the big draws of the iPhone is its array of dashboard-like widgets. The phone’s interface, almost like a monitor, also make widgets much more easy to use.

Mobile advertising will also benefit from the widget. Recent studies have stated that nearly 70% of mobile users shun advertising on their phones, but the mobile widget space could be a way for us to get in front of mobile users by giving them a branded service they find real value in.
