The 2008 CTIA Wireless conference has been going on this week in San Francisco. By far one of the most anticipated events at this year’s conference was a presentation today by Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz. He gave a speech calling on the wireless industry to embrace “openness” as the most beneficial path for developers, carriers and customers alike. To emphasize his point, the Facebook co-founder cited Apple, which recently announced its SDK (Software Development Kit) for the iPhone, This will allow developers to create 3rd party applications for the device. Moskovitz also took the opportunity to announce some interesting new functionality for users of his own company’s mobile social networking platform, Facebook mobile:
- Better integration of Facebook’s 3rd party developer platform for Facebook Mobile. Users will now be able to access outside applications installed in their Facebook profiles using a mobile device. This includes the ability for developers to designate special keywords that can then be sent to Facebook’s 32665 (FBOOK) shortcode, for whatever purpose they desire.
- Moskovitz also brought a special guest Mike Lazaridis, Co-CEO of RIM (makers of the Blackberry) to announce a new partnership. Starting today, Blackberry users can have their own Facebook mobile application easily downloaded to their home screen. The app integrates seamlessly with Blackberry devices. Lazaridis demonstrated how, after taking a picture, users would now have an option to automatically upload the photo to their Facebook profile and tag the photo with names. T-Mobile will be the first carrier to offer this application to its customers, but it will be available as a download to Blackberry users from any carrier.
