by Allison

WiMax Coming to NYC [Wired]
Samsung and Sprint are bringing fourth-generation high speed internet to New York (score!) The network, which already powers much of Asia, will be launched next April under the brand name Xohm. WiMax is much better suited to mobile than than W-fi, providing better penetration, connection quality and video viewing.

MySpace Gets Fashionable [BusinessWeek]
The SNS already has a toehold in the music scene, now its stepping onto the runway with a fashion community, MySpace Fashion, after a year in beta testing. We’ll see how this top down approach compares to more niche sites like Iqons.com, which launched in January.

Social Networks Can Make Big Bucks [MediaPost]
A new IDC study projects that SNS revenues will more than double this year to as much as $1 billion from $400 million in 2006 using a model that includes advertising, subscriptions, and ecommerce. The catch 22 they face isn’t going away though: they aren’t a “brand-safe” environment. Advertisers don’t want to see their displays next to a 15-year-olds gross humor. But to control user-generated content will turn away users, which is why the advertisers are there to begin with.

MTVu College Network Wired for Fall [MediaPost]
The Fall line-up for MTV’s College Network is full of UGC tie-ins: “How Do I Say This?” invites students to upload advice to their site and “Sex Cred with Dr. Ruth” uses topics and questions uploaded to mtvU.com. Keep it clean, kids.

American Eagle Pulls a Bud.tv [Variety]
American Eagle Outfitters is going after young consumers online with 77E, an entertainment unit that will product branded web series to run on AE.com and other sites like YouTube, MySpace and Facebook. Ok, while it is smart to package advertising like content for a young audience, it’s all in the execution. Anheuser-Busch tried a similar effort with Bud.tv that crashed and burned. An AE VP was quoted as saying, “We need to make deposits into the cool jar.” We wish them luck.

Web’s Niche TV programs Win Sponsors [WSJ]
Online video has become the fastest-growing category of Internet ad spending in the past year with much of the pie going to niche shows like Geek Entertainment TV and others hosted by blip.tv over those on traditional TV network sites.

Nokia’s iPhone [Engadget]
During it’s GoPlay Event this morning, Nokia presented a phone that looks curiously like a you-know-what that is due out next year. A Nokia rep said, “If there’s something good in the world, then we copy it with pride.” We’re sure some people down on Mott Street would agree with that.

Hilly Kristal, CBGB Founder, RIP [Village Voice]
First the legendary rock club was shuttered, now it’s founder has passed.
