Ever since Facebook opened its API, developers have been building like Noah before the flood. In just 10 weeks they made over 2,500 applications, but few made a cent. In fact, many had to pay for their success thanks to high server costs and no revenue.
That is all changing. Earlier this month, the social network announced plans to give away $10 million worth of grants to developers who built applications for its site. Now AT&T has launched the Developer’s Challenge. They will award $5,000 and publicity to the top entry in its contest to create an application combining Facebook and mobile features.
AT&T’s Developer’s Challenge, designed by FH Youth & Mobile Marketing, requires entrants to integrate a Facebook feature (photos, messages, news feed, pokes, etc.) with a mobile component (text/picture/video messaging, downloadable content like ringtones, graphics, games, etc). Participants also have to register with the challenge to get a unique ID key.
Entries for the challenge are due by December 14, 2007. The application with the best functionality, appearance, and feedback will be announced in mid-February.
