Tabula Rasa: MMO for the Casual Gamer

The hardcore video game genre has some fresh competition with the November 2nd release of Tabula Rasa, a game that seeks to grab a segment of the gaming community untouched by MMOs (Massive Multiplayer Online Games)–the casual gamer.

While Tabula Rasa has many aspects of the traditional MMO, including a experience-based leveling system (meaning that more play time equates to a stronger player), certain elements signal a departure from the traditional style. Unlike time-consuming, fantasy-land games like World of Warcraft (WoW), Everquest 2 (EQ2) and Lord of the Rings ,Tabula Rasa is a military combat action game with a sci-fi backdrop. Gamers that enjoy shoot-’em-up themes like Halo can find a similar alien-fighting experience with a MMORPG twist. This move from fantasy to sci-fi/action may be key to widening player subscriptions.

Additionally, less devoted gamers may also benefit from the Tabula Rasa’s Character Cloning System, which acts as a save function. Players who want to test out different classes of characters don’t need to repeat the days of playtime required to reach high levels. On average to reach the top level of EQ2 requires 2400 hours (100 days) of playtime, whereas WoW averages 500 hours. Anyone less than a hardcore gamer would never consider spending this much time leveling.

Despite its departure from traditional MMORPGs and its innovative foundation, it will be difficult for Tabula Rasa to overcome the reputation of current leading titles like WoW. However, it comes with a strong pedigree; the executive producer is Richard Garriott, famed creator of Ultima Online, the game that is said to have started the entire genre of MMOs. As the gaming market seeks to grow, it will be interesting to see whether the coveted casual gamer will embrace the MMORPG, or stick with Sodoku.
