‘Beowulf’ Tops Weekend Box Office, Giving Boost to Future of 3-D Films [WSJ]
Angelina Jolie was surely a factor in “Beowulf’s” #1 standing this weekend, but so was the movie’s 3-D technology: 40% of the movie’s $28.1 million in ticket sales came from special 3-D showings in regular theaters and Imax screens. “If this isn’t a mandate on the popularity and viability of 3-D, I don’t know what is,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers.

Web Show ‘Quarterlife’ Lands a TV Deal [WSJ]
Less than 1 week after its online debut, NBC acquires rights to broadcast “Quarterlife,” the MySpaceTV drama, and to distribute the show internationally. Episodes will continue running online and premiere on NBC in February or March.

A Guerrilla Video Site Meets MTV [NYT]
MTV joined up with Vice magazine last year to start like VBS.tv, a video website that one executive calls “’60 Minutes’-meets-‘Jackass.” In August, the site had 184,000 unique viewers from the U.S. according to Comscore. More importantly, it’s rebuilding MTV’s cool cred. (Also, check out their Virtual Lower East Side, still in alpha testing).

IPods, Uggs, And Wii Top Early Holiday Shopping Lists [MediaPost]
Black Friday will soon be upon us, and this year, shoppers are starting their searching earlier than usual. Black Friday ad websites are up 52% over last year, while searches for the term “Black Friday ads” are up 91% over last year. And while iPods, Uggs, and Nintendo Wii topped searching lists, Sony’s PlayStation 3 cracked the Top 10 list for the first time this holiday season.

Sony Needs a Hero for PlayStation3 [NYT]
Analysts are expecting a record-high year for gaming: $10.5 billion has already been spent on consoles, software, etc. during the first 10 months of this year, thanks to big-sellers like Halo 3, Guitar Hero III, and Nintendo Wii. One exception to the trend is Sony’s Playstation 3, which despite MediaPost’s Black Friday report above, still lags 3:1 in sales against Xbox 360 and 4:1 against Wii.

AOL Unveils Video ‘Ticker’ Ads, New Alternative To Pre-Roll [MediaPost]
AOL’s debuted plans for “video ticker ads”—graphic banner ads that will be displayed at the bottom of streaming video. Ticker ads swill expand into a full video ads when clicked on by consumers.

Act Would Require Colleges To Deter Illegal Downloading [MediaPost]
A Congressional Committee unanimously approved a bill requiring colleges that receive federal funding to explore “technology-based deterrents” to illegal downloading by their students.

YouTube Tackles Bullying Online [BBC]
YouTube’s Beatbullying channel will allow everyone from celebs to young people post videos on how to avoid bullying, and stop being the bully.
