The Age of Awkward Socialites

by Allison

Does technology make young people socially awkward basement-dwellers? Or does it increase communication and extend social circles? The answer seems to be both.

Last week, Prince Harry was apparently busted by his girlfriend for exchanging texts with a female admirer. Indeed, texting is the medium of choice for the young and hyper-social –even for messages of love. Along with instant messenger, it is replacing email, phone and in-person interactions for what were formerly intimacy-worthy conversations.

Two new studies are backing up this trend. More than four in 10 teens (43%) who use IM use it for things they wouldn’t say in person, says a new AP-AOL study. 22% use IMs to ask people out on dates or accept them, and 13% use them to break up. A study from Insights Express had a third (34%) of Gen Yers arranging to have another person call their in order to rescue them from undesired social situations.

Texting and IM enable youth to correspond more with more people, but in shorter, less engaged ways. Therein lies the paradox of the awkward socialite, equally connected and avoidant. But in a world where social lives depend on Twitter, traditional etiquette won’t cut it. Teens and twenty-somethings operate according to a new intimacy scale that goes from the casual Facebook friending to the intimate phone call. It’s no coincidence that “awkward” is the new “whatever”. We’ve gone from Gen X malaise to Gen Y discomfit. There is no Preppy Handbook or Etiquette Guide from Emily Post for these hyper-connected adolescents. So yes, they may hang up when hang up when a friend’s mom answer. But, they are figuring it out for future generations, setting new social rules as they go.

Rule #1: You can’t text message breakup!!!
