Does technology make young people socially awkward basement-dwellers? Or does it increase communication and extend social circles? The answer seems to be both.
Last week, Prince Harry was apparently busted by his girlfriend for exchanging texts with a female admirer. Indeed, texting is the medium of choice for the young and hyper-social –even for messages of love. Along with instant messenger, it is replacing email, phone and in-person interactions for what were formerly intimacy-worthy conversations.
Two new studies are backing up this trend. More than four in 10 teens (43%) who use IM use it for things they wouldn’t say in person, says a new AP-AOL study. 22% use IMs to ask people out on dates or accept them, and 13% use them to break up. A study from Insights Express had a third (34%) of Gen Yers arranging to have another person call their in order to rescue them from undesired social situations.
Rule #1: You can’t text message breakup!!!![]()
