Tonight’s Battle of the Sexes: More than Just a Game

vanessa.jpgAs recent trends have shown, the video game demographic is expanding as the popularity of gaming grows. While young teenage males still hold a very large share of the gaming population, more and more video gamers are females and adults. While these demographics are typically casual gamers, some are actually investing enough time and passion to be considered “hardcore” gamers.

One such woman is “Dead or Alive 4″ pro, Vanessa Arteaga, a member of the Championship Gaming Series. Vanessa has shattered the concept that female gamers can only be casual players as she rivals–and often outperforms–men at the highest level of professional play is CGS, the first ever professional video game league.

Today, Vanessa will face off against one of the world’s best “Dead or Alive” players, Ryan “OffbeatNinja” Ward. The competition is being dubbed the ‘Battle of the Sexes’, a modern-day version of the Bobby Riggs vs. Billie Jean King tennis match from 1973 that pitted a world-champion male athlete against the best female tennis star. Formally named the Itagaki Challenge, the competition was called out by Japanese video game designer and “Dead or Alive 4″ creator Tomonobu Itagaki to see if Vanessa truly has what it takes to defeat her male counterpart.

Mike Snider wrote a piece on the two gamers as part of the daily Digital Download section of USA TODAY. Check out Vanessa and Ryan’s interview to learn about each gamers achievements and their predictions for the male versus female match-up. The competition will air tonight at 11:30 EST on DirecTV Channel 101 and www.thecgs.com.
