Alan and Allison have a guest post today on YPulse (Anastasia Goodstein’s must-read blog on Gen Y), which looks at the upcoming mobile trends in Asia. It discusses:

  • Social networking sites (SNS) like Mixi and Gree have gone mobile, and the next wave are game and avatar-based versions.
  • Location-bases services (LBS) are launching in Asia because of the high GPS penetration there. These have huge possibilities for social networking.
  • Barcodes can bring hyperlink any physical space, and are being used frequently in Asia for viral campaigns, couponing, and purchasing.
  • The “mobile wallet” (m-commerce) was pioneered by NTT Docomo in Japan with their highly successful i-mode service will be integrated into these mobile SNS and virtual worlds, as well as tied in with LBS and barcode technologies.
  • RSS is powering both mobile widgets (the entry point to the mobile web) and ticker-tape news feeds that scroll across the handset a la CNN.
