The next-gen console wars raged in 2007 with Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony duking it out to become the newest and greatest technology in gaming. Likewise, CE Giants Sony and Toshiba are locked in a format battle concerning the next generation of high definition DVD, and young gamers could play a huge role in determining who will win.
While Microsoft’s Xbox 360 ostensibly backed Toshiba’s HD DVD format, which needs to be purchased separately, Sony’s Playstation 3 sports a built-in Blu Ray player. Now Warner Brothers, the leader in home movie sales and a long standing hold-out in the format war, has announced that, as of May 2008, they will put their muscle behind Blu Ray. Microsoft is shaking off the news about their technology partner, but insiders know that this is really a battle for the digital living room. This could explain the recent rumor that Microsoft may consider supporting Sony Corp’s rival Blu-ray technology.
The DVD war mimics the infamous Betamax/VHS feud of the late 70’s. Then, VHS eventually prevailed due to a number of reasons including recording length and cost to manufacture. Sony’s Playstation 3 carries a higher price tag, which has in part contributed to its generally lower sales compared to the Xbox 360, but now purchasers may now look at the PS3 as a money-saving choice for their home entertainment theater. Given Warner Bros push to Blu Ray, other studios are expected to follow suit, giving gamers a compelling reason to invest in a Playstation 3 - they can both watch HD movies and play next-gen games. This dual-capability may very well give Sony the edge in the console war, and put the nail in Toshiba’s coffin.
