On Campus, Smartphones Are the Holy Grail

by NGT

As I sat slumped in my seat on the bus, my cell phone rang, and I began the clumsy dance of trying to pause my iPod, set down my agenda and close my notes, while still managing to mutter a simple “hello.” This constant juggling act of tasks, technology and a never-ending to-do list is the story of my life and many other college students across the world.

Today’s average college campus resembles the busy streets of New York City—people dart across streets with books in hand and phone to ear, all racing to a class, a job, an interview… The pressure on students to accomplish more and do it faster, while still attempting to have a social life, has given rise to the need to constantly improve our multi-tasking skills.

We depend on technology to help us deal with the constant demand for our time. Whether it is using Google Calendar to organize events, a Blackberry to email a professor or the iPhone to search for textbooks online, we are constantly tapping digital resources to manage the many tasks on our plate. College students don’t just want smartphones, they sincerely need them. Models such as the Blackberry Pearl, Motorola Q (at right), iPhone and Voyager seem to be popping up all over campus. The ability to perform almost any function of a computer, MP3 player, camera and phone all packed into one mobile device has become the Holy Grail of must-have items for the college student today. It seems that more than ever, students are flocking to their cell phone providers to get the latest smartphone that allows them to manage the hectic lifestyle we call college.
