Does the Pope Skateboard?

by Zack

Or does he just appreciate a tricked-out deck? These questions came to mind when we read that the Archdiocese of New York was holding a contest to create a skateboard for the Pope. The winning board will be given to Pope Benedict XVI as a gift when he visits New York later this month.

The contest, which is aimed to raise awareness and interest among youth, was open to kids ages 11-18. It received 70 entries, which were whittled down to three finalists. You can help decide the winner by voting online until 12:01am this Saturday, April 12. You can even buy one through BoardPusher, with all proceeds–or the board itself–going to inner city kids retreat and recreational programs.

The three final designs have already been crafted into boards fit for his Holiness. According the Archdiocese’ website:

The finalist’s designs have been manufactured into into a 7-ply, 8-inch Canadian Maple skateboard deck by Boardpusher.com. Each deck has been set-up with a pair of wheel axles, also know as “trucks”, which have the shape of a Maltese cross embossed on them from Independent Skateboard Trucks. The bushing of the trucks are colored Papal gold. Each wheel is assembled with high-performance, Bones Super Swiss-6 ball bearings. The wheels are white with a red and white pattern of letters that spell “Supreme”–wheels fitting for the Supreme Pontiff.

It sounds transcendent. But we think the only thing that could top the Popemobile is a hoverboard.
