Wii Fit is the New Nordic Track

by Forest

This month, Nintendo released the Wii Fit, a system designed to provide a full body workout without the worry of “Wii wrist.” Indeed, it seems to be the real deal. That is, you might be able to tell people that you exercised on the Wii this morning without getting laughed at.

Until now, the most exercise you could get with a Nintendo (not counting running while holding one) was on an old power pad and maybe with a power glove if you were really motivated.

The Wii Fit features a pressure-sensitive balance board and a host of activities such as yoga, aerobics and stretching. More than a gimic, the Wii Fit represents an interesting coalescence of digital and “real” life. It could also be the answer to China’s mandate that gamers under 18 “do suitable physical exercise” after 3 hours of play. Indeed, systems such as this signal a return to more active forms of “play,” and continue to extend gaming to people of all ages. It’s especially a hit with moms, who can finally toss that Nordic Track from 1996 in favor of a Snow Ski minigame.
