As most of our readers know, Twitter is a platform that allows users to “microblog” i.e. write short personal updates of 160 characters or less that answer the question “What Are You Doing?”. Some recent Twitters we’ve received have been: “ No gym at this hotel. How am I supposed to work on my triceps?” “Back in rainy NYC” “ Making a tumblr account. I have officially lost track of how many social networks/services I have registered with.” Ah, haven’t we all? Well here is one more: Plurk, a Twitter competitor.
Our NGT correspondent in Singapore Kevyn Eng says, “it’s like Twitter, but better! It allows you to form cliques and have discussions with short messages in real time. It also has much better visual elements and more features than its counterpart.” While Twitter is certainly gaining momentum, it’s constantly being faced with bug-related issues and users are beginning to get impatient. In fact, it’s broken so often, Ryan King started istwitterdown.com which answers the perennial question with a simple Yes or No. This undependability has led Kevyn and others to jumping Twittership to try this new platform.
But as Kyle Monson points out in PC Magazine, “if I end up moving over to Plurk, I’ll probably just use all the things that Twitter already had. And I’ll have to start out with zero contacts.” Good point. But perhaps the opportunity is there in SouthEast Asia, where Twitter has less penetration, for Plurk to step in with a better app and really take off.
