Comeback of the Mixtape

by Forest

Illustrating the retro technology trend, mixtapes have been making a resurgence over recent years. And why not–music is, was, and always has been essential for youth. In a recent MTV survey, 66% of 14-34 year-olds said music was important in their life. They said it shapes who they are, speaks for them, and opens doors for conversations. “Music is my companion,” said one. On top of that, mixtapes are are about personalization. You can essentially create an audio lifecast, a soundtrack to your life.

However this generation of mixtapes are decidedly 21st Century. Muxtape, created by one of the guys at College Humor, lets you create and share online MP3 mixes. You use your own music, which could get dicey from a copyright standpoint, so enjoy it while you can. Mixwit also allows you to make and share a virtual mixtape, but you draw from the libraries of Seeqpod and Skeemr. It doesn’t have everything, but it has New Kids on the Block. You can also customize your mix with an actual tape (or a jpeg of one). For a hardcore throwback, download it onto a Mixtape USB.
