SURVEY: Do you TALK on your mobile phone?

by NGT

Once upon a time, phones were used exclusively for talking. Person A would use their telephone, as they were called, to speak with Person B. And that exchange comprised telecommunication.

Then came cell phones (see image at right). These were used for talking as well, but there were no wires attached to the device! They were clunky, but progressive. Talking to other people on your cell phone was called mobile communication.

Now the device formerly known as the phone (perhaps we need a symbol?)  allows communication to transcend the spoken word. Many people who have grown up with cell phones prefer to text or email rather than actually talk. So we can’t help but wonder: Is talking the new snail mail? And if so, does the prevalence of nonverbal mobile communication signal a loss of intimacy? Does it simply make us more efficient? And how do we determine the best way to get our messages across?

On our next episode of MBTV, we will ponder this topic. To aid in our research, we’re polling the masses on their respective mobile MOs.
